Lawsuits

a close up of a bowl

The NYC Hospitality Alliance successfully advocated for a “private right of action” to be removed from a couple of laws, which means they cannot be sued in private court for large sums of money for  frivolous reasons and/or minor technical violations of certain laws. Because of this, laws are more appropriately enforced by government agencies so employee rights can be ensured, while well-intended businesses aren't forced to settle lawsuits over minor violations and/or because they are cost prohibitive to defend. There are still many problematic laws in which we seek to remove the private right of action while preserving the right of plaintiffs to receive justice if they’ve been aggrieved.
